U.S.C.T. – United States Colored Troops hat
I was asked if I had any Colored Troops hats or t-shirts. Usually when I don’t have something, I’ll search for it and share the information that I find.
I looked for Colored Troops hats and also t-shirts and found nothing. So here is our first USCT gear. Honoring the African Americans that fought in the Civil War from 1863 – 1865.
Congress along with President Abraham Lincoln’s support, passed the Second Confiscation Act and Militia Act on July 17, 1862. But this limited the enlisted Black Soldiers to menial tasks and positions away from combat. As well as limiting their pay.
The Emancipation Proclamation (issued September 1862) took effect January 1, 1863, which freed all slaves in Confederate territory and increased the allotment of African American enlistment to 200,000 Soldiers. In May 1863 the War Dept. issued General Order #143 creating the Bureau of Colored Troops and the USCT was official.
Many of the USCT veterans joined the 9th and 10th Cavalry, as well as the 24th and 25th infantry regiments that became known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
Please take the time to read more on the USCT and their participation. It’s cool to wear the apparel, but life changing to know the history and share it.
